Academic and Sports Program
The Academic and Sports Program is an
optional program for all Cub Scouts. It is not part of the
normal requirements towards ranks, except where used in
obtaining various Webelos activity badges and Wolf Elective
20 (Sports). Its purpose is to assist the Scouts in learning
a new skill, or improving one they already posses.
A variety of recognition items are available
for the boys who participate in the program.

Cub Scouts Outdoor Activity Award |
|
Tiger Cubs, Wolf
and Bear Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts have the
opportunity to earn the Cub Scout Outdoor
Activity Award. Boys may earn the award in each
of the program years as long as the requirements
are completed each year. The first time the
award is earned, the boy will receive the pocket
flap award, which is to be worn on the right
pocket flap of the uniform shirt. Each
successive time the award is earned, a wolf
track pin may be added to the flap. Leaders
should encourage boys to build on skills and
experiences from previous years when working on
the award for a successive year. |

Bay
Area Ridge Trail |
The Bay Area Ridge Trail is a 500-mile
multiple-use trail connecting parks and
preserved open spaces along the ridgelines
surrounding California's San Francisco Bay. More
than half of the trail is complete, open to the
public, and in use. There are short and flat
trails for younger hikers, such as Cub Scouts,
and there are longer, more advanced trails for
the older hikers. For more information on the
Ridge Trail and trail descriptions and maps of
the many trails, see the Ridge Trail website:
www.ridgetrail.org/trail.
| A set of patches is available
for Scouts who have hiked at least
one trail in each of the four
quadrants of the Bay Area Ridge
Trail system. The North quadrant
covers Sonoma and Napa counties. The
East quadrant covers Solano, Contra
Costa, and Alameda counties. The
South quadrant covers Santa Clara
and San Mateo counties. The West
quadrant covers San Francisco and
Marin counties. The patches are
available from the Scout Shop. |

BSA Family Program and Award |
|
The BSA Family
Program helps parents strengthen their family
ties in two ways. It gives parents specific
ideas for drawing their families together
through family talks and other activities. It
also provides a framework for meetings of pack
parents every three months at which parents can
draw support from one another and share their
successes in enhancing family life.
For more information
about this program, please contact out Pack's
BSA
Family Program Coordinator.

BSA Emergency Preparedness Program |
|
The
Emergency Preparedness Award is part of a new
BSA program of emphasis for Cub Scouts, Boy
Scouts, Venturers, and Leaders, in cooperation
with the Federal Department of Homeland
Security. The pack is encouraging all of our
Cubs and leaders to earn this award this year
and has incorporated this program into pack
activities. Requirements for this new award are
different for each grade level. The award may
be earned more than once, though only on pin may
be worn on the uniform. When you or our son has
completed the requirements for this award, you
should inform your Den Leader.

Cub Scouting’s 75th Anniversary |
|
In

Scouting Program, which began in 1930, BSA has
developed a set of 75th Anniversary Awards which

BSA Fitness Award |
| The
new BSA Physical Fitness Award, is designed to
help members renew a commitment to physical
fitness and good health. Those who earn it will
receive an official certificate, plus are
eligible for a special pin and crimson-colored
patch. Most important, they receive a jump-start
toward a healthier lifestyle, balanced diet, and
regular exercise. The BSA Physical Fitness Award
challenges parents (whether or not they are
Scout leaders), siblings, and even members of
the wider community to fulfill the requirements.
"We're opening this award up to everyone," says
Ed Woodlock, BSA national director of Health and
Safety Services. "After all, health and fitness
isn't just an issue with the Scouts; it's a
community problem." A great article describing
this award can be found at (click
here). The BSA Fitness Award will be
emphasized in all of the pack’s Sports Program
activities this year. If you would like for your
Cub or your entire family to earn this award,
contact the Asst. Cubmaster for Sports for more
information. |

Boys' Life Reading Award & Contest |
|
Every year, Boys’ Life Magazine conducts a
reading contest, which requires entrants to
write a one-page report about a book they have
read. The book can be fiction or nonfiction. The
report has to be in your own words—500 words
tops. You may enter in one of these three age
categories: • 8 years old and younger, • 9 and
10 years old, • 11 years and older. When Pedro
receives your report, you'll get a free patch.
Yes, the patch is a temporary insignia, so it
can be worn on the Cub Scout uniform shirt, on
the right pocket. Proudly display it there or
anywhere! The top three winners will receive
additional prizes. The contest is open to all
Boys' Life readers. Be sure to include your
name, address, age and grade in school on the
entry. |

The National Summertime Pack
Award Program |
| Cub
Scouting is a year-round program.... September
thru August. As such, it is the responsibility
of every Scouting unit to ensure a quality Cub
program, even during the summer. During the
months of June, July, and August Cub Scouts and
their families can participate in Scouting
activities that are educational and fun! A full
summer program keeps a pack healthy, parents
interested, and Cub Scouts eager to register for
another year. Participating in these summertime
activities also gives the Cub Scout, his Den,
and the Pack an opportunity to earn the National
Summertime Pack Award, an important component of
the Quality Unit Program. All the pack has to do
is plan and conduct a monthly pack activity for
June, July, and August. The whole idea is to
keep your pack together and doing things during
the summer when boys have the most free time.
The application is available (ONLINE) |

Religious Emblems Programs |
|
A Scout is reverent. He is
reverent toward God. He is faithful in his
religious duties and respects the convictions of
others in matters of custom and religion.
To encourage members to grow
stronger in their faith, religious groups have
developed the following religious emblems
programs. The Boy Scouts of America has approved
of these programs and allows the emblems to be
worn on the official uniform. The various
religious groups administer the programs. Check
with your local council service center or
contact the religious organization directly to
obtain the curriculum booklets. |
